Friday’s opening ceremony was a spectacular display of Britain’s history and culture, celebrating the best of Britain and showcasing the 30th Olympiad and London 2012 to an estimated global audience of one billion.
The Opening Ceremony reflected the key themes and priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport, inspiration, youth and urban transformation. The ceremony, created and directed by Danny Boyle, had something for everyone; celebrating the contributions that the UK has made to the world through innovation and revolution, as well as the creativity and exuberance of British people.
The show also featured iconic British celebrities and sportspeople, including David Beckham and Bradley Wiggins, screen characters Mr Bean and James Bond, and even a surprise acting debut from the Queen herself.
The finale of the ceremony saw the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, formed of 204 copper petals representing the competing nations coming together in London for the Games, ignited by seven young Torchbearers nominated by Britain’s past and present Olympic and sporting greats.
With such a fantastic opening ceremony, our hopes are high for Team GB and with one gold medal, two silvers and two bronze medals already, we’ve got our fingers crossed for a few more. Come on Team GB, you can do it!
The Power Plate team were out in force, at last week’s FIA Flame conference, where they showcased the latest products in the Power Plate portfolio to over 800 delegates from the health and fitness sector.
The two-day event starts with a golf and spa day, which gives operators and suppliers the chance to catch up with old friends and industry contacts, and meet and make new contacts. The following day, the conference itself took place at the Magna Centre in Sheffield.
The seminars on offer were laden with tips on how companies can do more for their clients, whether it be integrating social media into their communications strategy, or keeping abreast of emerging trends.
For us, the social media seminars were spot on and opened our eyes further to how this relatively new form of communication can be used in a business environment. However, the best seminar had to be the one presented by SAS hero Chris Ryan, who gave an incredibly emotional speech about ‘the one that got away’.
In the evening we all attended the Ball of Fire, an awards ceremony that recognises outstanding companies within the fitness industry. This was a very glamorous event, with everyone making a huge effort in the fashion stakes.
As well as enjoying a delicious three course meal, we learned about the FIA’s chosen charity, the Matt Hampson Foundation, which was set up by England rugby star Matt Hampson in 2005, after he was paralysed from the neck down following an accident during his training with the England under 21s squad.
Awards on the evening included Club of the Year, Educational Club of the Year, Spark of Innovation, Operator of the Year and the Future of Flame, and then it was time to take to the dance floor and enjoy the live band and DJ.
Both the Flame Conference and Ball of Fire were a great success, so thank you very much to the team at the FIA for organising such a fantastic, informative and fun-filled industry event, for the fourth year running. All we ask is that next year’s venue comes with air-conditioning (or the weather co-operates and isn’t quite so muggy!)
As FIA sponsors, Power Plate will be out in force at the Magna Centre in Sheffield, to showcase our new touch screen technology and our great pro6 model, as well as our new leasing options which make owning genuine Power Plate machines easier and more cost-effective than ever before.
The Flame Conference really is one of the biggest industry events of the year, and as this year’s theme is ‘In Search of Excellence’, the organisers have lined up a great array of inspiring presentations from industry experts in branding, social media and business success.
But it won’t be all work and no play. There’s also the opportunity to relax and network with colleagues, thanks to the annual FIA Golf Day and pre-conference reception at Tankersley Park Golf Club and Tankersley Manor, also in Sheffield, the day before the conference.
The conference will be opened by keynote speaker, SAS hero Chris Ryan, who will be sharing his remarkable story, before the other headline speakers, including Brian Gibbons, Frank Furness and Henry Mason, also share their wisdom and knowledge on everything from the latest research, technological developments and trends within the industry.
To wrap up the event, the post-conference Ball of Fire promises to be a night to remember, recognising and celebrating some of the biggest names in the health and fitness industry, with the announcement of this year’s winners of the prestigious FIA and Matrix Flame Awards.
If you will be attending the Flame Conference this year, please do pop by and say hello to the Power Plate team. And if you can’t be there, then stay tuned as we’ll bring you more updates and highlights right here.
We always look forward to meeting you all so be sure to come and visit us on stand L184 in the Technology Zone and discover the latest technological advance in home fitness – the Power Plate my7 machine.
This is the first Power Plate machine to feature an interactive, touch-screen video interface with access to more than 250 progressive full body workouts, drawn from a library of more than 1,000 individual exercise videos.
It is also the first home Power Plate machine to feature proMOTION™ technology, an embedded cable resistance system adding another dimension to your workout. These cables transfer vibrations more effectively, so you can perform a far wider range of dynamic exercises both on and off the platform.
With the ability to create individual user profiles, which record your workout progression and favourite exercises, the whole family can use the my7 machine to achieve their personal fitness goals.
Taking up about as much space as an armchair, the my7 model will fit easily into your home and your lifestyle. With the integration of proMOTION technology, it also eliminates the need for additional resistance training equipment, making this quite possibly the only piece of home fitness equipment you will ever need to own. But don’t just take out word for it, why not drop by to try it for yourself.

The store hosted on a magnificent, fun packed event with the help of its many retail partners. There were prizes galore on offer, a guest DJ set the scene mixing retro tunes with modern music, whilst guests enjoyed healthy canapés courtesy of SoulmateFood, all washed down with mini bottles of Harrods champers. Celebrity guests in attendance included singer Peter Andre and football legend Sol Campbell, as well as a host of special VIPs.
Entertainment on the night included demonstrations from Capoeira dancers, Zumba instructors and yoga bunnies, who struck the right balance of fitness trends.
At the new Power Plate retail space there was a touch of Christmas sparkle thanks to a captivating performance from English National Ballet senior principal dancers Dmitri Gruzdyev and Erina Takahashi. Their show stopping display of strength, elegance and flexibility left their audience in awe of their grace and power…. making them the perfect ambassadors for Power Plate.
And the performances did not stop there, our very own energetic studio team of trainers were also out in force, presenting elements from the new Power Plate Combination class concept, effortlessly holding the most challenging of yoga poses on the vibration platform.
All in all, it was a show stopping evening and we cannot wait to see what the department has in store in the run up to London 2012!
